About this work

Description

The man on the left "appears to be uttering a jest" (Hofstede de Groot, loc. cit.). The items on the table are man on the right looks knowingly at the viewer. Hofstede de Groot identifies items on the cask as a paper of tobacco and a charcoal pan, but here there is no cask, and one of the objects on the table is a closed box (for tobacco?)
