About this work
Description
Notebook containing a transcript of Charles Knowlton's Fruits of Philosophy, the private companion of young married people, first published in the USA in 1832 (first British edition 1833), with minor textual variations, 19th century. The copyist and date of transcription are unknown, but the text was probably copied at a date before the work became more widely available in Britain following the unsuccessful prosecution of Charles Bradlaugh and Annie Besant for reissuing the work in 1877-78; see S Chandrasekhar, "A Dirty, Filthy Book" (Berkeley, 1981). The transcript lacks the publisher's preface, author's philosophical proem' and appendix.
