About this work

Description

The programme traces the history of The Peckham Centre, which was opened in the 1920's until its closure in 1950. The Centre had been set up in the pre-NHS days to provide a healthy lifestyle. It included a swimming pool, gym, running track, dance hall and library. It was supposed to accomodate 2000 families, at a cost of 1s per family, and go through three stages of tests, laboratory tests, inspection and counselling. If problems were found, advice was given, but the centre did not act as a doctor or prescribe treatment.
