Biographical note

By the second year of Casualties Union it became clear that instructor-quality volunteers were needed to maintain standards in local areas. As well as providing training in casualty simulation to Casualties Union members, instructor courses began to be offered.

In 1946 Casualties Union introduced study circles, a form of correspondence course between study circle leaders and probationers. At the end of the course, probationers underwent a proficiency test assessed by three medical observers. Once successful, probationers could apply to become full Casualties Union members.

Members of a study circle could then go on to train as instructors, and then senior instructors
