Biographical note

Prior to the first International Congress, business meeting and formal constitution of the Confederation in September, 1954, representatives of European midwives met in March, 1953 in London to discuss the proposed new organisation. The new title of the organisation was agreed as the International Council of Midwives , with the representatives present forming the Convening Committee until the first business meeting. The agenda for the meeting in 1954 was formulated, including the drafting of the Constitution, a Triennial Congress cycle, and agreement regarding membership, headquarters and Secretariat, currently at the Royal College of Midwives in London. The meeting was chaired by Miss N. Deane, M.B.E, President of the Royal College of Midwives.
