About this work

Description

A highly critical examination of the life and achievements of Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965), founder of the world- famous Lambarene Leper Hospital (1913) and Nobel Peace prizewinner (1952). In his lifetime he was regarded as a hero - indeed, almost as a saint - but in this documentary his critics present a different view. Paul Boateng, M.P., Gerald McKnight (author of "Verdict on Schweitzer"), Prof. Bruce R. Hure (Syracuse University, New York), Rhona Schweitzer -Miller (Schweitzer's daughter) and some former colleagues accuse him of using his charisma for his own aggrandisement; of operating a system of apartheid at Lambarene and even of neglecting his patients. Sir Peregrine Worsthorne is his sole defender in a programme which abounds in anachronistic judgements about Schweitzer. There are many archive film clips of Albert Schweitzer and the Lambarene settlement.
