The funeral took place at Westminster Abbey on the 26th of April 1882. The pall bearers were Sir John Lubbock, T.H. Huxley, James Russell Lowell, Alfred Russel Wallace, Sir Joseph Hooker, Dr. William Spottiswood (President of the Royal Society), Canon Farrar, the Duke of Devonshire, the Duke of Argyll and the Earl of Derby
