About this digital image
The Secret Companion. R J Brodie. London, 1845 Since the 18th century there was a belief in the medical and moral dangers of masturbation that survived until well into the 1930s. This "medical work on onanism" charts the deleterious effects of selflove, arguing that the "wanton waste" of semen would lead to a range of disorders from nervousness to paralysis. Representing the last stage of mental and bodily exhaustion from Onanism or Self-pollution.
