    TO THE PUBLIC. The progress of Science, and the-triumph of Labour and Persoverance, united with Art, are recently displayed by an important Discovery in the Materia Medica. It is universally known that the late war was carried on in the West Indi es and other parts, in an atmosphere impregnated with disease and pestilence, the effects of which have been so calamitous, that other foes wqre but as shadows S 'A •• »• . v 1if * f, f in the scale. On an accurate calculation, it is found that nearly two-fifths of th$ Europeans are continually fwept away by the desolating distemper, to which the appellation of the Yellow Fever is now generally given. To Prevent or to Cure it had baffled all the exertions of the Faculty ; at length, when hope was yield¬ ing to despair, and all remedy deemed undiscoycrable, a Specific is pro¬ duced both for Prevention and Cure, (The truth of which cannot he doubted by any one that will take the trouble to read the Pamphlets which are distributing gratis, at the Warehouse, No. 40, Charing-Cross.J The Nation at large, so justly con¬ cerned for the fate of such brave men as devote themselves to her welfare, will rejoice at this Discovery; and all persons anxious for the health of their respective connections abroad, or for those who are Jeaving Europe, must have their fears much alleviated by availing themselves of this opportunity to * 5 ‘ i a • * * * • • * secure those who are dear to them from the dangers of an infectious Climate, Dr.WILLICH, in a late communication to the Proprietors, observes, that ^ it will be admitted the origin and nature of the Yellow Fever is but imper¬ fectly understood, even by the most skilful Practitioners, who have had frequent opportunities of watching its progress and witnessing its baneful effects in the West Indies and America. And although Drs. Hilla ry, Moseley, Rush, Clark, Blan e, Dancer, A ' ’ , 7 * V i Jackson, Currie, and many other Physicians of the Western Continent, have furnished us with minute descriptions of its symptoms, and the various, more or less successful methods of cure they have respectively adopted; yet the history *» , * * ' • • > and clinical treatment of the Yellow Fever are still in their early infancy. Hence ^ it will not be surprising, that the accounts we have read of thoSe intelligent men are alike different in their manner of describing the disease, as they vary in prac¬ tice, or the mode of relief adopted. In its general character, however, there A i ' ‘ t. 1 # i appears to be less difference than in the means suggested for its prevention or removal; and, though some professional writers have been bold enough to main¬ tain, that it is not contagious, unless by actual contact, they would nevertheless i hesitate to expose themselves to its pernicious influence! during its prevalence. As new comers, or persons recently arrived in the West Indian climates, are phjefly subject to its attacks, it must be considered as an office of humanity, to guide and direct them, so that they may, if possible, escape its severity, which cannot, in the present stage of the disease, be more effectually done than by re- ( w .... r ► l t 1 < ,r commending the use of the Yellow Fever Medicine, the component parts of which, Dr. Willich adds, he is in part so well acquainted with; that he conceives it his duty to contribute as much as possible to the success of so im¬ portant an undertaking, as this Remedy is admirably calculated to answer the most sanguine expectations, as well as the Directions accompanying it, which he also affirms are certainly established on the basis of experience and ought to be most strictly observed.
