Description

Described as "the immense Hôtel de la Reine (1572-8; later the Hôtel de Soissons; destr.), whose surviving Doric column (h. 25 m) stood in the middle of the court ... its summit serving as an observatory for the Queen or as a memorial"--The dictionary of art, London 1996, vol. 5, p. 166. The column is visible in the right background
