The lettering is hand-written in black ink onto the mount. The lettering on the photograph reads left to right: "European firms, M.O. house, Police PWD, Customs, D.C. office, D.C. house"
Notes
Contained in an album of photographs describing conditions of hygiene in West Africa. The album was presented to Sir William John Simpson (1855-1931) by R.H. Kennan, and probably by Simpson to the Wellcome Institute in 1911. Simpson, knighted in 1923, was Professor of Hygiene at Kings College, London, and lectured on hygiene at the London School of Tropical Medicine, 1898-1923. He investigated plague and health conditions in many countries
