Reproduction note

Lettering on engraving: "This print is engraved after an entirely new drawing by Mr. Fuseli, he being unwilling that the preceding outline should pass as his idea of Mary. But Mr. Lavater's remarks rendered it necessary to the English edition to give a fac-simile of the French engraving". The outline is published on the page preceding the engraving (by Holloway) after this drawing. Lavater had criticised the features of the outlined figure as "too strong for a female figure", making exception only for the ear, in which he saw delicacy and precision; Füssli comments in a footnote that he has endeavoured to correct these shortcomings
