About this work

Description

A horse or mule with a woman, wearing large earrings, holding its halter. They are standing outside a building. This old Mongol lady's family, whom Thomson met, rented a house in Beijing. To his surprise he found that the family stabled their mules in the dwelling-house proper, while they set up their tents in order to live in the courtyard. Apparently this was a common practice among Mongols visiting Beijing at the time
