Description

Close up of cluster of dark green, shiny, toothed leaves and long yellow, slender, flowering spikes. The prickly green fruites containing brown nuts follow in Autumn. Flowers attractive to bees and sometimes used in pipe tobacco. The hard timber used in furniture trade and extracted tannin in leather industry. Shampoo is extracted from leaves and chestnut skins. Nutritional quality of chestnut flour similar to that of wheat flour. Marrons glaces are a sweetmeat made from chestnuts and traditional stuffing for turkey. An infusion of the leaves has been used to treat whooping cough.
