About this work

Description

This series contains of correspondence of a mostly ephemeral nature, with business colleagues, friends and acquaintances. It seems to have been compiled by HF Johnson, based at Snow Hill, acting in the capacity as HSW's personal secretary. Some of the correspondence filed under 'W' is from HSW to Johnson. The series illustrates HSW social activities, particularly as a Freemason, yachtsman and as President of the American Society in London. There is a run of correspondence in connection with the retirement banquet and presentation to Thomas Bayard, the first American Ambassador, in 1897. There are also many letters asking for charitable assistance from individuals and organisations. Letters connected with the running of the works at Dartford and welfare and social provision for the staff are filed under 'Dartford', 'Wellcome Institute & Social Club' and Mrs Martin Leake. There are a few letters from Syrie Barnardo, before and after their marriage, as well as letters of congratulation on the marriage and birth of Mounteney.
