About this work

Description

The design shows the mourning procession entering a church. The parish clerk pauses on the steps, as if admonishing the assembled crowd to be quiet, he is followed by a clergyman in surplice who reads the exordium of the burial service. The next clergyman, who seems to be posing for the crowd, will probably deliver the eulogy. The mourners follow in pairs behind the pall. A crowd is seen in the distance, one man climbing up on a pillar to have a better view. An assistant draws back the pall, topped with plumes and bordered with coats of arms, before the procession enters the church
