About this work

Description

Transmission electron micrograph of the epithelial surface of the peripheral cornea. These epthelial cells have very few organelles apart from nuclei. They adhere to each other via numerous desmosomes - the black spots along the interfaces between cells. The corneal surface is to the left and microvilli are visible on the surface of the outermost cell. This cell is approximately 3 microns deep, from the surface to its contact with the subjacent cell.
