Biographical note

The Wellcome Tropical Institute was founded in 1985 as a successor to the Wellcome Museum of Medical Science, focussing on tropical medicine. The main purpose of the Institute was to provide a resource for teaching tropical medicine and public health throughout the world.

In 1989 the Wellcome Trust decided to disband the Wellcome Tropical Museum and discontinue funding the tropical distance learning programme established in 1987. Other functions of the Institute continued under the name Wellcome Tropical Resource.
