Description

Collection of miscellaneous French letters and documents, mainly from and to medical men, 1676-1789.

Correspondents include Antoine le Camus (1722-1772), no.8, and J. D. Duplanil (1740-1802), nos.13 and 16.

The documents include a fragment of a pre-publication draft of Tableau de la population de toutes les provinces de France, by the chevalier des Pommelles (Paris, 1789), subscribed with the imprimatur of Jean-Frédéric de La Tour-du-Pin Gouvernet (1727-1794), comte de La Tour du Pin (no.23).

Acquisition note

Many of the documents were purchased from the Parisian dealers Charavay and Degrange between December 1927 and April 1936 (accs. 63453, 63700, 64689, 64715, 65655, 66365, 67372, 67373 and 69426). Others were purchased in London, at Sotheby's sales on 15-17 February 1932, lot 175 (acc.76068) and lot 547a (acc.76088), and on 13-14 November 1933, lot 205 (acc.67469); and at Stevens's sale, 6 January 1931, lot 361 (acc.68115).

Ownership note

Two documents bear red printed stamps of the 'Collect. de P. Jud Fontaine'
