About this work

Description

A sick man sits in an armchair, his left foot resting on a cushion. He grimaces and clenches his left fist in pain. In the foreground, a book inscribed "Scudamore on gout", presumably referring to Charles Scudamore, A treatise on the nature and cure of gout and rheumatism, of which a 3rd edition appeared in 1819. Left on table, a bottle of "Reynold's drops". In the sufferer's left hand is a bottle of "Brandy", and a jar of brandy lies beneath the table, left. Right, a jar of "Thompson and Fear-him's mixture"
