BSE

Tyrrell chaired two committees (The Spongiform Encephalopathy Advisory Committee; The Consultative Committee on Research into Spongiform Encephalopathies) investigating the cause and potential impact of transmissable spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) in animals and humans, as well as the identification of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). He was also involved in providing evidence for the BSE Inquiry; the subsequent Phillips Report was published in 2000.
