Description

Gladstone leads a charge holding a standard marked "Peace. Retrenchment. Reform." The Roman soldier on the right has a shield maked "Slagg", indicating John Slagg (1837-1889), a Manchester businessman and Liberal politician elected as one of the members of Parliament for Manchester in April 1880. The soldier in the lower left corner has a helmet marked "Lowe", indicating Robert Lowe (1811-1892), Liberal member of Parliament for London University. The Conservatives up on the citadel include Disraeli (wearing a crown), Stafford Northcote (holding sword and shield, and others
