Description

Collection of miscellaneous French letters, mainly from and to medical men, 1871-1913.

Correspondents include the director of the School of Medicine and Pharmacy of Toulouse (2-3, 9), Alexandre Lacassagne (24), Pierre Paul Émile Roux (45), and Augustine Charcot (46).

There is also a letter from Dr Ladreit de la Charrière on the burial of his kinsman, General Jules-Marie Ladreit de Lacharrière (1806-1870), killed in the siege of Paris (1), and a letter mentioning the politician Théophile Roger-Marvaise (13).

Acquisition note

Almost all the letters were purchased in Paris, mainly from the dealers Charavay and Degrange, between December 1927 and July 1936 (accs.55099, 55163, 55165, 56146, 56987, 63453, 63700, 64689, 64878, 66365, 67371, 67372, 67391, 69115, 69124, 69286, 69292, 69617). One letter was purchased at Sotheby's sale, 13-14 November 1933, lot 205 (acc. 67469). Five letters have no recorded provenance.
