About this work

Description

This is a documentary about the athlete, Caster Semenya, who having won the 800m World Championship in 2009, suddenly disappeared from the international athletics circuit amid controversy about her gender. This film has exclusive access to Semenya's training schedule as well as her family in a remote South African village. She struggles to rationalise what has happened to her, which is argued to be illegal, largely as there is no recognised test for gender in sport. Dr Gerard Conway, consultant endocrinologist, is the expert who comments on the science and whether it is possible to be definitively 100% male or 100% female. Within the scope of this documentary, the question of Semenya's gender is considered unanswerable; she was raised female and this is how she identifies herself.
