Biographical note
The Association's interest in nurse training had been instigated by the Society of Superintendents of Tuberculosis Institutions, which had formed an Examination Committee and awarded its first certificates in 1924. After the 1928 merger, the British Tuberculosis Association continued to award a Certificate in Tuberculosis Nursing and then, from 1962, a Thoracic Nursing Certificate. The Committee made repeated attempts to secure recognition of the qualification by the General Nursing Council , by means of the establishment of a special supplementary register, but without success. The numbers of candidates gradually declined and from 1977 the certifcate was awarded only to qualified nurses. In addition to organising the training and examination of nurses, the Committee also took an interest in related issues such as the recruitment, health and welfare of nurses, and the needs of those who developed tuberculosis during training.
