About this work

Description

Bible. N.T. Matthew 27.57-60; Mark 15.46; Luke 23.53. John 19.38-42. Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus drag Christ's body towards a tomb. A man bending over half inside the tomb appears to be gathering something in a cloth. The four women are Mary Magdalene, Mary (mother of James the less and Joses), Salome ("who ..., when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him") and the Virgin. Mary Magdalene kneels and prays before the body. In the distance on the right stands an empty cross and a ladder; the crucified criminals still hang on their crosses. The instruments of the Passion (crown of thorns, linen resting on a bowl, nails, hammer and spanner) rest on a slab in the foreground
