About this work

Description

While Clinical Assistant at the Maudsley Hospital 1933-1934, John Bowlby undertook research into the types of personality which precede psychotic and psycho-neurotic breakdowns. At the London Child Guidance Clinic in 1936 he endeavoured to identify these types in childhood. The work formed the substance of a thesis later submitted to the University of Cambridge for the degree of MD. The following are research notes probably associated with these early studies. John Bowlby's working titles for the files have been indicated and the major authors discussed have been listed where possible. Additional material , including drafts of the thesis, was found in accessions received after 1995. The abbreviation "PPT", used in these files, appears to be used to mean "Precipitating Factor".
