Ink and brush drawing from a handwritten copy of the anonymous text Dingchuang yaojue (Essential Art of Boils), executed in 1874 (13th year of the Tongzhi reign period of the Qing dynasty). Dangxiong ding (boil in the middle of the chest) occurs at the centre of the breastbone. It is treated with needling and opening (tiaoci) in the third section of the spinal vertebrae, at laoshi wo (Labour and Food Nest?), etc. Mei ding (eyebrow boil) and meixia ding (boil under the eyebrow) both occur in the brow area. These types of boil are treated with needling and opening in the inner elbow and the first section of the spinal vertebrae. Pianduikou ding (boil diagonally opposite the mouth) occurs at either side of the occipital bone. It is treated with needling and opening at the dihe (Earthly Union) location.
