Segment 1 A baby receives a jab and cries. The voiceover says, 'a few moments of discomfort and a lifetime of protection in return'. Various people are interviewed on the street about their thoughts on immunisation, some saying they are for it, some being against. The narrator explains what immunisation is, and how it works, as mothers and babies are seen playing together. The different types of vaccinations for illnesses such as diphtheria, measles and whooping cough are discussed, and the correct ages to administer them.
