About this work

Description

According to the lettering, the significance of the figures is "mysterious". The woman reclines in the manner of the Vatican Ariadne but holds a torch downwards. The composition is identified as derived from a relief on a funerary urn of the emperor Severus Alexander and his motherJulia Avita Mamaea, possibly in the Barberini library. Another part of the relief, showing Leda and the swan, is shown in Tav. XXII (Wellcome Library no. 2856125i)

Lettering

Roccheggiani dis. e inc. Bears number: T. XXI

Creator/production credits
