Sir Roy Calne : interview with Mandy Morton.

Retiring surgeon Sir Roy Calne gives his opinions on some current medical issues. The costs, and risks, in medical research are considerable, so, as government reduces funding, the Wellcome Trust and drugs companies become increasingly important. Research into transplant of animal organs to humans has potential. He recommends that surgeons should be more generalist, as he was, and not overspecialise. He regrets having to stop surgery completely on retirement as his skills could still be of value. Lastly he discusses world population growth, especially in India, and the pollution and destruction of the environment.
