About this work

Description

The interior of a room with plaster peeling off the wall and ceiling. On the left, a fireplace, and, next to it, an open cupboard in which is a pile of coals (?). Against the back wall is a bed, with the foot close to the picture plane. In the bed is an old man. Left foreground, another table with things on it, and, very close to the picture plane, a medicine bottle: the bottle was identified by Dr Keith Ball as "Mist. Expect.", an expectorant mixture routinely prescribed for people with bronchitis
