About this work

Description

The following is an interim description that may change once detailed cataloguing takes place in the future. Set of correspondence written by epidemiologist William Haigh, between 1918 - 1923, as he worked across post-war Europe, primarily with the League of Nations Epidemiology Commission. The letters detail William Haigh's experiences, working with the League of Nations Epidemic Commission, to combat various infectious diseases as they spread across Europe. He travels across Europe, including Rome, Athens, Warsaw and Moscow, commenting on the political situation at home and abroad. He describes his hands on work in orphanages, with refugees and his frustrations with bureaucracy and in trying to get aid to the people who need it. His letters also talk about his travels, and the cities he visits. There is one letter from 1963 from his wife (Cahé Haigh) in which she talks about how the couple know the correspondents, and gives more detail about Haigh's activities post-Commission up to his death in 1961 at 83 years old (including his work on a cruise ship).
