Description

Extrapulmonary Pneumocystis carinii infection This high power view of a section of tongue shows small, dark, viable cysts of Pneumocystis carinii, which appear black due to the silver staining. In the background, the brownish, shadowy material is degenerate cysts. Grocott silver stain. This is a biopsy from an HIV-positive adult with P. carinii, infection in the tongue.
