About this work

Description

Millfield, Hull Road, York, was acquired in September 1919 for ‘borderland cases’ in the early stages of nervous and mental disorder, with the possibility that it might also be used as accommodation for Retreat staff. The Millfield estate comprised a seven bedroom house, gardens and buildings in twelve and a quarter acres, situated about ten minutes walk away from the Retreat. It was intended for male patients, while female patients of this type were to be admitted to Throxenby Hall at Scarborough. Millfield was run as an independent venture from The Retreat. However, demand for treatment of mild cases of mental illness was less than expected, and the venture was not very successful, making a financial loss. In 1922 Throxenby Hall reverted to its function as a Retreat holiday home, and Millfield began to be used for quiet chronic lady patients and as a home for Retreat patients on leave of absence. Millfield was sold in 1928 to meet the cost of the acquisition of Garrow Hill Estate (see RET 2/2/18).
