    I feel confident no man in the United States could do it with equal accuracy. I hope that some of our own physicians will soon give us a standard American work on Diseases of the Skin, that can be relied on, and will be a credit to the profession : as it is now, not one physician in twenty knows the difference between humors that are the most widely apart in their nature; and every thing goes by the name of Salt Rheum or Scrofula. Whoever will be the author of our American standard, I hope he will write plain and concise, and not follow that vague and obscure style of writing that some European writers delight in. In 1798, Willan divided cutaneous diseases into eight classes, according to their elementary character. This was the greatest improvement ever made in this branch of the medical art: it is so simple and beautiful, that all nations have adopted it by universal consent: — Order I. Exanthamata. — Erythema, Erysipelas, Roseola, Rubeola, Scslrletma, Urti- carea. Order II. Vesicule. — Miliaria, Varicella, Exema, Herpes, Scabies. Order III. Buelle.—Pemphigus, Rupia. Order IV. Pustules. — Variola, Vaccinia, Ecthyma, Impetigo, Acne, Sycosis, Tenia. . Order V. Papules.— Lichen, Prurigo. Order VI. Squamce. — Lepra, Psoriasis, Pytiriasis, Ichthyosis. Order VII. Tubcrcules. — Scrofula, Cancer, Lupus. Order VIII. Macules. — Colorations, Tuseedo cutis, Ephelides, Naevi, Discolora¬ tions, Albinismus, Vitiligo. All this last order is only discoloration of the skin, such as freckles, liver-marks, and mother’s-marks. I have omitted them in these pages, as too trifling. The discovery of the virtues of the pasture-weed is now so well knows, ' and fully set forth in my Circular, that I may omit it in this pamphlet, more particularly as it is of no consequence in effecting a cure. There are some peculiarities in the operation of the Discovery on the system, that may prove a satisfaction to the patient to know. For instance, when there is Canker of the mouth, that extends to the stomach and bowels, as it often does, then the Discovery causes very severe pains and griping : this is caused by the medicine coming in direct contact with the inflamed surface.
