About this work

Description

As modern genetics raises questions about the differences between populations, scientists are facing up to a deep taboo. This programme examines one of the most controversial issues, how far is sporting talent linked to race? The Difference travels to North West Kenya to investigate a mysterious concentration of talent. Here a valley the size of the English lake District has produced 12 of the world's top 20 distance runners. But to suggest that special genes may be a key factor in their running success has been dismissed by some as racist. Sport is just one area to highlight the impact of human genetic variation. What happens when people migrate, when genes evolved for life in one environment are inherited by an individualliving in another? The Difference shows how the transfer of genes to a new cultural context can be bad for your health.
