    only is sexual intercourse unnecessary for the purpose of inducing compensatory hypertrophy in the ovary, but that ovulation is also not essential for the occurrence of that process. In conclusion, attention may be directed to the fact observed by us, that if one ovary be i^emoved at a very early stage of pregnancy (series 1) abortion does not necessarily follow, the remaining ovary being apparently sufficient for the continuance of the pregnancy until full time. Such experiments therefore may be regarded as controls to those in which both ovaries were removed in early pregnancy and in which abortion followed in accordance with Fraenkel’s theory. REFERENCES.
