Description

This recording is of interviews with former colleagues and pupils of pioneering cardiologist, Sir Thomas Lewis. The interviews were conducted by Dr. Arthur Hollman in preparation for his biography on Lewis: 'Sir Thomas Lewis: pioneer cardiologist and clinical scientist', London; New York: Springer, c1996. Hollman, a cardiologist who worked with Lewis in 1943, gives a lengthy introduction to life as a student under Lewis. Dr. Joan Stokes, interviewed on 25 July 1974, remenisces about being Lewis' student at University College Hospital, 1937-1945. Sir John McMichael, Wellcome Trustee and former Professor of Medicine at Hammersmith Hospital, is interviewed 31 July 1974 [the beginning of his interview is missing but he is re-introduced later on in the recording]. He was a student of Lewis 1922-27 and worked with him 1934-1943 and provides much context to Lewis' work.

This tape is part of a collection donated to Wellcome Trust by Dr. Arthur Hollman in 2007. The tapes contain oral history interviews conducted by Dr Hollman between 1974 and 1990 with a grant from the Wellcome Trust. The interviews are largely with former colleagues and pupils of Sir Thomas Lewis and two are with Lady Lewis. They provide an invaluable source of first-hand information about Lewis and the medical world during his time, with personal recollections going back as far as 1920.
