Prints of this composition from the 18th century bear an attribution for the composition to David Teniers: see the Wellcome Library catalogue no. 21118i. In the present version, the two men are set within a wooden window frame, which is in turn surrounded by masonry at the sides and plaster over exposed brick at the top. Vine leaves descend down the left side. The patient is in the right foreground and the surgeon operates with his right hand (as in some but not all of the prints)
