Poligny (Jura), France: an ancient mosaic floor at the villa of Estavage (Chambrettes), including figures of gryphons and centaurs. Line engraving.
About this work
In the centre is a lion eating the head of a lamb. In the corners are pairs of gryphons, and above them pairs of centaurs. On each of the four sides is an oblong panel containing the winged head of a man. The figures had been interpreted as grotesques, but were reinterpreted by Bruand as astrological motifs in a temple of the sun
