About this work
Description
This unusual and frequently visually dramatic film was made on location in the British Antarctic Territory and shows footage from numerous aspects of the British Antarctic Survey in 1973. In 1943 a British Naval Expedition established bases on islands off the Antarctic Peninsula. The Falkland Island's Dependencies Survey (FIDS) was a peaceful extension of 'Operation Tabarin' and became The British Antarctic Survey in 1961. The men who live and work there still call it FIDS. In the film different narrators, as well as some of the inhabitants, give accounts of life in such a cold and isolated environment.
