About this work
Illustration showing male and female Rice birds (Hortulanus Caroliniensis). As their name suggests, these birds feed on rice grains, devouring whole crops in Carolina during the month of September. The cock's bill is lead-colour, the fore-part of the head black, the hind-part and the neck of a reddish yellow, the upper part of the wing white, the back next the head black, lower down grey, the rump white. The breast and belly of the hen is pale yellow, the back brown.
