About this work

Description

German documentary with English voiceover and occassional subtitles, looking at the relationship between science and agriculture. The film follows the development of crop protection agents from the laboratory to biology tests, experiments on animals, tests to assess the effect on the environment and long-term animal feeding trials. The conclusion is that the residue levels are so low that they would be harmless over a lifetime. Archive footage and prints illustrate the natural crop spoils from history, such as the Irish Potato Famine. Organic farming is briefly covered, with the claim that there is no discernible difference between organic and non-organic food. Animation shows pests on crops. German farmers speak about their careful use of pesticides. There are some good cheesy shots of food. The programme ends by comparing the developed world question of 'Are we being poisoned?' with other parts of the world asking 'Are we going to starve?'. The conclusion is those asking the latter question need our help so that nobody goes hungry - presumably in the use of pesticides.
