Biographical note

The Mental Health (Scotland) Act, 1960 came into force in 1961, shifting the responsibility for patients discharged from mental hospitals to Local Authorities. This research was carried out in order to assess the needs of the patients prior to the changes. The grant from the Nuffield Provincial Hospitals Trust met the cost of a physician trained in social medicine, a social worker and a secretary to carry out the project.
