Letters between the General Secretary of P.E.N. and J B S Haldane, consisting of:

Letters dated May 1944 - February 1945 covering the P.E.N.'s decision to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the publication of Milton's Areopagitica with a conference on the issues raised by the book; Haldane's invitation to speak and discussions about the title of his speech and his preferred line of argument; discussion of the proposed publication of the speeches from the conference in a compendium, and whether Haldane is permitted to publish his speech in a magazine.

Letters dated Jun 1944 regarding Haldane's election to the P.E.N. as a member of the London Centre, and a copy of the P.E.N. London Centre Prospectus.

A letter dated 15 February 1945 enclosing draft extracts of Haldane's speech from the conference, and confirming permission for Haldane to publish his contribution in a magazine.

A letter dated 16 March 1945 enclosing the final typewritten proof of Haldane's speech at the conference titled "Spiritual Values are Determined by Economic Forces".
