About this work

Description

Papers relating to the WPRL being granted registration as a place at which experiments on living animals were permitted, under the terms of the Cruelty to Animals Act (1876). Following initial refusal, registration was finally secured in 1901 (Home Office to Henry Wellcome, 5 September - WF/WPRL/01/01)

The three files of correspondence are chronologically arranged, with some overlapping and occasional repetition of documents. They comprise correspondence with the Home Office, and background correspondence within Burroughs Wellcome & Co and with its advisers.

WF/WPRL/01/01 contains both the earliest correspondence (involving Dr T J Bokenham) and the final notification of registration; WF/WPRL/01/02 and WF/WPRL/01/03 provide further letters from within the sequence.
