Description

This print shows part of the "Roman" bath-house in Strand Lane, near the Embankment. It was probably built in the seventeenth century, using some Roman antiquities imported by the Earl of Arundel

Lettering

Looking towards the west end of the bath ; the bath is covered in with a vaulted roof, the age of which is a matter of great interest to students of Roman London Further lettering within the print: Stepped concrete erection apparently screening Roman retaining wall to prevent slipping of land from sloping banks of Thames. ; Roman brickwork crushed with deposit from spring ; Roman brickwork ; Marble casing taken from Earl of Essex's bath (A.D. 1588) ; Modern concrete about 9 inches thick hiding original red Roman tile paving
