About this work

Description

Wandelaar included in this engraving the rhinoceros Clara, which had arrived in Amsterdam in 1741. In the text to plate IV Albinus wrote, referring to the present plate: "Caeterum hac in tabula, & in octava, exhibita quoque figura rhinocerotis foeminae, quae ineunte hoc anno apud nos fuit, annos habens, ut custodes ferebant, duos cum dimidio. Ob raritatem belluae putavi figuras eius gratiores fore, quam alia quaecunque ornamenta ad arbitrium excogitata" (But in this plate, and in the eighth, are shown also the appearance of the female rhinoceros which, at the beginning of this year was in our country, having an age (according to her guards) of two and a half years. On account of the rarity of the beast I thought that its form would be more pleasing than any other ornaments devised according to my own inclinations"
