About this work

Description

Papers re the Foundation and its relationship with the Campaign, particularly background to its establishment (originally as the Marie Curie International Memorial) in 1948; its proposals to set up an independent Cancer Research Centre; views of the Campaign and other organizations on its early activities, methods of advertising and appeals. Includes correspondence, press cuttings, papers stencilled for Appeals Committee meetings, miscellaneous annual reports, educational leaflets, symposium programmes, and Christmas appeal labels of the Foundation.

The Foundation was set up in Jul 1948, soon after the NHS Act came into effect. Among its objects were the promotion of the welfare and relief of cancer patients, including the provision of special homes, equipment, amenities and services for patients nursed at home. It was not connected with the Campaign, ICRF or the Marie Curie Hospital in London, a fact which the Campaign was keen to stress, since it was critical of the Foundation's methods. (See also F.1/19)
